Freightliner® History
The history of Freightliner can be traced back all the way to the 1930s when the company was known as Consolidated Freightways. Originally based in the Pacific Northwest, they had their sights set on creating a truck that was strong enough to tackle the many mountain passes in the region. Initially, they only produced trucks for their own company, but in 1949, they sold their first truck to an outside company (a truck that currently sits in the Smithsonian collection). They became a freestanding manufacturer and distributor in 1974 and after selling the manufacturing portion of the business in 1981, became known as Freightliner, after their trucks.
While they’ve experienced their fair share of struggles, the company is currently one of the most successful truck manufacturers on the market. They’ve expanded their products to include other specialty vehicles, as buses and tank trucks are now sometimes built on modified Freightliner chassis. But more importantly, Freightliner has become a household name and an iconic brand worldwide. Every time you hit the road, you’ll probably pass a Freightliner truck because it’s the name that truckers everywhere trust to help get the job done efficiently and safely.
The Freightliner® Difference
There are a few features that put Freightliner trucks above the rest, and it starts in the engine. Freightliner engines are designed to help drivers go the extra mile, no matter how tough the roads get. After all, they started with a mission to tackle the harrowing slopes of mountain pass roads. Today’s rigs are powered by a Detroit suite of products, including the Detroit Integrated Powertrain.
Every bit of innovation helps you become more efficient and create a cost-effective hauling business. This includes incorporating cutting-edge technologies into already stellar models. Plus, they’re dedicated to meeting customer and market needs, so there’s no feature that’s wasted in the design.
